A Passion for Painting

My mom(Nancy) and I have been buying and selling Antiques for over 12 years now.  Anne has quite a few years under her belt as well.  It's amazing how excited we still get after we transform an ugly, or tired, unnoticed piece of antique furniture to something that is so adorable and loved once again.  It never gets old. We love to paint old furniture, but always give a beautful old antique a chance before we paint it. I was in the shop today, marking the furniture tags with the ASCP colors.  As I was walking around, I was remembering how ugly and tired most of the pieces looked. I thought I should share.

Auction jan 001 (800x450)
Bad, really Bad! Dark, dingy, and ignored.

Jan shop 2 039 (800x450)
Until now. Look at her smile.

Jan shop 2 040 (450x800)
Painted in Annie Sloan's French Linen, she shines, with her little crystal knobs, and light tatter.  Adorable, and so much more usable now!

Jan shop 2 044 (800x450)
It's remarkable what new life paint can give an old piece of furniture.  This piece would be perfect as a night stand, tv stand, or extra storage in a bathroom.

December shop 012 (800x450)
This dresser has seen better days.  She's been neglected and unappreciated for too long!

Jan shop 2 048 (800x450)
This by far is one of my favorite little dresser's we've had.  I don't know if it's all the jewelry she has now, which makes her look dressed up, but she's so cute.

Jan shop 2 050 (800x450)

Jan shop 2 051 (800x450)
She is painted in Annie Sloan's Old White.  Dressed to the max in big and little crystal knobs, she's perfect for a bedroom, bath, or kitchen (hint, hint).

Shop pics oct 015 (410x800)
Boring!

Jan shop 2 061 (450x800)
Fun and fresh now.

Jan shop 2 064 (450x800)
This secretary is painted in Old White, with a light tatter, and hand painted numbers to give it a fresh new take on vintage.

Shop pics oct 011 (800x600)
Last but not least, a tired old desk.  We've had lots of requests for desks and this weekend this one is making it's debut.

Jan shop 2 016 (800x450)
Great for a bedroom, living room or office, this desk is ready.  She's painted in Country Grey, and carries her original knobs with a light tatter to her edges.  This desk, along with all the other pieces shown here are still available.

I hope we have inspired you to breath new life into an old worn forgotten piece of the past.  Thanks to all our customer's today who braved our first midwest winter storm! Have a great weekend everybody!

What's New?

The past couple of weeks we have been trying to fit in as many mini day trips and auctions as we can. Keeping the shop full keeps us busy. Two weeks ago Anne and I spent the whole weekend searching for treasures. On Saturday we drove around southern Wisconsin in search of goods, and came up almost empty handed. Then Sunday we headed north again, and we actually ran into our new friend, from Urbanfarmgirlandco at an auction. It's always nice to run into fellow junkers like yourself, however, because we were so chatty, we were actually asked to be quiet. I felt like I was back in grade school, both embarrassed and annoyed! Anyway, Anne and I left pretty much empty handed from that too, so we were off again this past weekend. This time, we had more luck, a whole van full kind of luck. We just wanted to share a little of what's new at the shop. Auction jan 173 (800x450)
We loooove this old biscuit box.

Auction jan 182 (450x800)

This is a great little cabinet which would look good in any room of the house. She is painted in Annie Sloan's Country Grey.

Auction jan 172 (800x450)
This piece made its debut the last 2 sales and got lots of notice.  It would work as a great desk, work bench or kitchen island.  It's fab!

Auction jan 167 (450x800)
An adorable old baby scale with some reworked antique trim pieces (they make great jewelry displays when hooks are added).

The secretary got a face lift recently.  It turned out so cute.

Auction jan 159 (450x800)
This chippy old leather top stool is so perfect.  It just needs a little tlc.

Auction jan 183 (800x450)
We thought this should be left unpainted for a while.  It's in really good shape.  But boy oh boy will she be pretty with some ASCP on her!

Auction jan 178 (800x450)
We've added quite a few cool pieces of hardware.

 Auction jan 193 (800x449)

Vintage dictionary bundles.

These metal numbers would look great attached to a basket. There are lots of other treasures too.

It must be a sign...a vintage one!

Guernsey
So, if you've been in the shop lately, you may have seen this fabulous old Guernsey Dairy sign we have.  I'm in love with it.  I've wanted it since we obtained it, but didn't really have a place for it.  Well, we were in the shop yesterday moving stuff around and we were moving this sign and I started getting that irking feeling like, "this is mine, and if someone comes in and buys it, I'll die."  If any of you sell things, I know you know that feeling.  So I decided to search the internet for some creative ways to use old signs in your home.

Susan from Maple and Magnolia actually got this sign from our shop!  She used it perfectly.

Well, I'm definately inspired by these beautiful pictures, but I think I'm going to need to add some "new to me" old furniture to fit with the sign.  Looks like I'll be stealing more from the shop!

In case mom and Julie put the gabosh on me taking the Guersney sign, I found some great old signs on etsy.

15sign
How cool is this?  It is so shabby and industrial. It came from an old carnival. I would love to put this in my boys room...too bad they don't appreciate good junk yet. (Etsy- House of EONA- $48)

Stockholm sign

This was the side panel on an old swedish shipping trunk.  Love the bold plain letters.  (UrbanFarmGirlandCo-Etsy- sold...while I was doing this blog! But check out her other finds!)

Ice
I love the faded weathered look the sign has going on.  And who doesn't like....

Snacks
I for one, love snacks and pop.  The "snacks" sign is actually the back of the "ice" sign. (GreenPlanetSisters-Etsy-$42)

Mcnichols

I don't need to say anything about this sign. It speaks for itself. It's awesome.  I WILL say that the Etsy shop it is from is filled with great finds.(HavenVintage-Etsy- $79)

Francesign
Who wouldn't want an authentic French street sign from the 40's?  So cool. (SweetBrocante-Etsy-$119)

I still don't know if I'm going to keep the Gursney sign or not.  Maybe it will suddenly dissapear behind the magic curtain at the shop.  Sometimes I hide stuff back there till I'm at peace with selling it.  We have a Chicken Brooder that finally made it to the sale floor this December after spending 9 months in hiding- I wanted that too.

This week at the shop

We have had such a rush on mom's burlap runner's, she had to make a ton more for this week's sale.  We are so pleased you are all as fond of them as we are.  They are so versatile and so, so cute!

Moms runners 031 (800x450)
These are the few I snagged for a photo op.

We still have a few bags of snowballs left at the shop.  They look so cute in a bowl.

Moms runners 029 (450x800)
I love these tall candles.  I find so many reasons to use vintage keys and sheet music.  They are two of our favorite things to use.

 Moms runners 003 (800x450)
I know, you've seen this done a million times, but I couldn't resist.  They are just so cute!  The glass balls we used have a slight iridescence to them, and they are really quite pretty.  As you can see, Boom Boom really likes them too.
Moms runners 058 (800x450)

Moms runners 006 (450x800)
Nosey cat!  He ended up in 21 of my pictures.  He refused to get off the table.

Rolls
I love wrapping gifts in brown paper and then personalizing it with fun things on top.  We hope you do too.  We have quite a few rolls ready to go, and tons of ideas for the top.  How about a zinc letter tied on with red and white baker's twine? Or maybe green plaid ribbon with a glittered letter tag on top.  You could even put a pretty ornament tied up on top.

We are open again this weekend.  So come up and see us.  22029 N. Pepper Road, Unit 2, Lake Barrington, IL.  Thursday 10-5, Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-3.
