Vintage Bushel Basket Wreath

At a recent flea market, we picked up a bunch of old bushel basket lids.  Julie had the brilliant idea of making a Fall wreath out of them....mom had the creativeness to make it happen!  This is what she came up with.  I love it!!!

I love the old labels on the lids.

If you look at the labels closely, it says these baskets are from 1958 and are from Delavan, Wisconsin.  It's always fun to know a little history.

Here's what they started out as.  We have a bunch of these fabulous old baskets w/lids for sale at the shop.  They are so great for decorating in the fall.

Savoring Summer

It's been a while since we last posted.  Kids, summer and school have had our attention lately.
Although summer is officially over, due to the new school year, the girls and I just can't resist taking advantage of the warm nights.  As the girls ran through the sprinkler for probably the last time, I realized I never shared with you my favorite find of the summer.

 

Before we had left for our Forth of July trip to the cabin, I had seen these boxwood topiary at The Home Depot.  I was in love!  They were fab.  But way to much at $100 each.  Still a great price though!  After the trip, everything was on sale, and I couldn't believe there were still some left.....at 50% off!!!

I got two of them for $50 each.  Now I just need to figure out how to keep them alive through the winter!  Any ideas?

 

These pots were actually hanging baskets that were also on sale for under $8 each.  I bought a ton of them and put them all around the patio, in pots, and window boxes.  I saved a bundle! 

 

Although I will miss my beautiful roses, and flowering pots, I can't wait for fall.  It's my favorite season!  I look forward to mums, pumpkins, and falling leaves.  Maybe I'll be lucky and find a great deal for some fall planting as well.  Speaking of planting.....the Fall is a great time to plant!  Plus, most nurseries have all their stock on sale too. 

This week at the shop

We've been busy at the shop this past week, so thanks to everyone who has come out! I snapped a few pictures the other day.

We picked up this great table last week up north.

We also picked up these great old buckets.

The graphics are wonderful.  They are from Bombay India, and transferred glycerine to the States during WWII.

Mom put together this adorable flower filled basket this week.  It would be so cute on a front door.

We have a few sailboats left in the shop.  They are perfect for summer decorating.

We also have sweet little glasses and beachy place mats this week.

How cute is this glass?  They are a great size.

We pulled out the old recipe card bundles.  We have sold a "bundle" of  these in the past.

I can't believe this bed was still around.  It is so perfect for a guest room or little girls room, or cottage, or beach house, or cabin........you get the point. Kris from Junk Chic Cottage actually picked this bed up the other day.....yeah!

I used to collect old hat boxes.  I just think they are so great stacked, and are perfect for storing stuff.

Some of them actually have the owners notes still on them.  This particular box held quite a few hats.

This one is from The French Room at Marshall Fields.

I can't stress enough how perfect these flower vases are for large bloom flowers.  They are perfect for hydrangea's.

Mom also got busy this week and made more runners.  We have a few French themed ones, and she even made a few regular burlap ones a little longer than usual.

Welcome Home

My Annabelle Hydrangea's welcomed me home yesterday, after a wonderful 4th of July weekend up north.

They are bursting with full, beautiful white blooms.

We always use Annabelle's in the shop to fill flower vases.  We are always getting asked what they are.  For this reason, I thought I'd share a little information on them.

 Arborescens or 'Annabelle' are deciduous shrubs that have a long bloom season.  They like partial sun, and can reach up to 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide.  They are cold hardy in zones 4 - 9, and are rather fast growing.  They also require regular watering.   Annabelle's have beautiful white blooms in the summer which later turn green, followed by a wonderful brown in the fall.

My Annabelle's get picked all season long, and pruned a bit in the spring.  During dry spells, I give them a little more water than usual.  Besides that, I just let them go.  Before a big rainstorm, it's good to go out and gather some blooms, because the bushes get tossed about, and end up looking very messy and droopy until they dry off.  Picture a Peony bush after a storm. That's sort of what mine look like for a short time afterwards.  But they do "pop" back up quickly.

As you can see, just a week and a half earlier, they had much smaller blooms were far less white.

In my opinion, you can't go wrong with one of these hardy, ever giving shrubs.  I just love the fact that from spring till fall I have beautiful blooms to fill vases with.  Have a wonderful week, and stop by the shop.  We will be open this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 11th, 12th and 13th, as well as Tuesday from 9-12.

What to do this weekend

This weekend there are a couple of venues to check out for great antique and vintage finds. 

We will be joining in at The Arboretum of South Barrington's Antiques and Garden Market.  We did this venue a few years ago and loved it.  We have been waiting for a chance to do it again and we have lucked out this weekend!  So we hope you can join us on Sunday, June 23rd. It starts at 10am and goes till 4pm.  Rain or Shine!  It is located at 100 W. Higgins Road in South Barrington.

But, if you can't wait till Sunday, check out Northwind Perennial Farm's 17th Annual Antique and Garden Sale in Burlington Wisconsin.  It is truly one of my favorite places to visit.  I love the beautiful ride up alone, not to mention the century old farm and nursery it is held at. The grounds are gorgeous, inspiring and always filled with perennials for purchase.

The sale is Friday and Saturday June 21st and 22nd, and is from 9am - 5pm both days.  It is located at 7047 Hospital Road in Burlington Wisconsin.  But don't wear yourself out!  We still want to see you on Sunday at the Arboretum.
