Tiny Worlds

Recently I've been obsessed with creating terrariums. I don't know if its my longing to garden, which, may be a while, or how utterly adorable these little things are when they are done.  I've made a ton in the last few weeks for friends and family, and thought I would pass along a little inspiration.
I started by gathering supplies.....glass container, small plants, moss, charcoal, small pebbles, and soil.

I was a sucker for all these little versions of violets, and ferns.  They are just so sweet.

I stuck with ferns and violets, because that's mainly what my nursery had, but you could also use small orchids, and different mosses.  You could even create an open terrarium with all succulents.  The Internet is flooded with ideas. 

This was a basic kit I had purchased and used on the first couple of terrariums.  I later found it more economical, (because I was making so many) to buy larger bags of everything.  Besides the glass container, which I purchased at Hobby Lobby, this is everything you need. 

Here is a side view of one of the terrariums so you can see the different layers.  The first layer is rocks or pebbles, followed by charcoal, then a layer of moss.  Next comes the soil, then plants, and more moss to cover any open areas of soil.   It's really quite simple, and I even had the kids helping me.

Each one is a little different.  In mine, I added a gazing ball I had purchased for my daughter's fairy garden.  It added a touch of whimsy.

They are super sweet, and very simple to make.  They make great gifts as well.

I'm thinking of ordering some of these tiny mushrooms.  They are perfect for a small terrarium.  They are from Etsy. 

So, while waiting for the warm weather, and Spring to arrive, you could garden today on a very "small" scale with a terrarium.  Hmmm, maybe I'll make some of these for the shop.  Speaking of the shop, we are open this week.  Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 4-6 from 10-3pm.

A Spring Chicken

My mind has been on spring.

I miss my chickens. I was in my third trimester this winter, so my husband has taken on the chicken coop duties. So I'm missing my girls.

And my guy.

Here's my coop in the winter.

Where's the big chicken shed you ask?  Well, I don't have one.  I started out with ducks, so my husband made me a duck house....see the little red barn?  That's the duck house.  Well now, it's a chicken coop.  But it's way too small for the girls, so my husband built a winter coop in the pen a couple years ago(its hidden by the plastic we add on top of the pen in the winter), that they have been living in year round. 

This is Missy...she's peeking out of the barn to see all the snow. 

I've been asking for a new shed for the ladies for years now, but my husband pretends to not hear me. I think he's afraid if he builds me a shed, I'll get a goat or a donkey.  I might, but thats besides the point. Well, since he had to take care of the girls this past winter(due to my pregnancy), he is starting to understand my plight. It's not easy crouching down into the coop to clean or gather eggs. So, much to my husbands dismay, I've been searching the internet looking at pictures to find the perfect coop for him to build for the girls. This Spring.

I love this woodsy, sort of rustic coop.  My yard is filled with oak trees and shade, so my greenery would look very similar to this.

Could this be any cuter?  Hens actually do like privacy when they are laying, so this isn't just for looks. Besides being adorable, these little curtains will give you happy hens.

I would move into this coop.  I don't think I would ever leave if this was my coop. It is too fabulous. The chandelier, the art, the vintage screen door, the old upholstered chair...it's just too much for my hen-loving mind to deal with. Fab-u-lous!

Speaking of chickens, chicks are now on sale at Farm and Fleet!  These are my chicks from last year.  I usually get a couple each year... I can't wait to get some!  Hopefully, I'll have a new coop sooner than later to put them in.  I gotta go bug my husband some more.  I hear my son asking him to build him a loft bed....hey kid, get in line.  Coop first...then your bed.

BTW- The shop is open this weekend!!

Kindness of Others

My first outing with little Mary Jane was to drop my son off at his preschool class last Thursday.  When  we got to school, I looked in his cubby, and I found this.

The ladies at the church that he attends preschool at, baked a loaf of banana bread, wrapped it in tissue paper and attached a beautiful piece of linen with an embroidered cross.

They tied it with an adorable pinky purple yarn and attached the most touching prayer.

  

Isn't this prayer absolutely beautiful?  

The banana bread was DELICIOUS!   My boys finished it all by themselves!

I was so touched by their kindness and I'm so happy to have learned this little prayer.  It is just so sweet.

Thank you to all of you who have sent your sweet thoughts and congrats to me.  You are all SO kind.  She is a blessed little girl for sure and will enjoy seeing you all at the shop.

By the way, she went to her first flea market today!  What a proud day for mama!!

Cold Hands Warm Heart

In the winter, in the shop, aka warehouse, it can be really cold! Colder than outside sometimes, until the heat kicks in.  Well, I usually warm up quickly, except for my hands, which are always ice cold!  Mom recently made me some hand warmer hearts.  They turned out adorable! 

This version however, I wouldn't recommend putting in the microwave to heat up.  They are beautifully adorned with little bunches of flowers, and are more of a little Valentine decoration, or ornament.

They would make the perfect little Valentine gift for someone special.

These are filled with rice, but you could also add lavender to the rice to make it a cute little sachet.

As a child I fell in love with these pretty millinery bunches.  Now they bring back sweet memories of my mom crafting when I was young.  They are still one of favorite things! 

A few of these would be so sweet strung on a special Valentine tree, or maybe across the top a young girls mirror.  Either way, they turned out perfect.  Now she just needs to make me the undecorated version for my pockets! Hint Hint!

Meet Mary Jane!

We have all been blessed lately with a very sweet little baby girl, Mary Jane.  My sister finally got her little girl.  In a house of all boys, she is a welcomed joy.  So  many of you wished my sister such sweet blessings, so I wanted to share with you some pictures of the baby.

She is such a pretty little thing. 

She looks a lot like my sister. 

When she is awake, she is so attentive and looks right at you when you talk to her.  It just makes your heart melt

We are so happy for Anne and Matt and the boys to finally have their little girl.  She makes their little family complete!  With three older brothers, she will surely be spoiled.

Soon enough she'll be at the shop with us for you to meet.  Until then, she'll be relaxing at home with Annie.

Mom and I will be open this Tuesday from 9am -12pm, and again this weekend.
