Quick Fall Decorating

We wanted to share a few quick and super easy decorating ideas that we pulled from the shop this week.

It doesn't get any easier than this.  Mom just added a swag of leaves garland around the top of a garden urn, and added a pumpkin.
Here we just laid a bushel basket on its side and filled it with more autumn greenery, and some antlers.  It's an instant fall arrangement.  We have tons more great antlers to choose from if you don't have any.  They are great for fall and winter decorating.
We love these large vintage scoops.  Look how cute it is filled with a little seasonal twist.
Get out your collections ladies.  A collection of vintage Thermos's turns into a fall display simply by adding a couple of sunflowers.

Enjoy your weekend.  We will be heading up to Elkhorn Antique Market on Sunday to shop.  Our guys will be selling "junk" from behind the curtain at Tattered Tiques.  We won't really be advertising it's Tattered Tiques. They have named themselves "The Family Jewels." Just look for two guys wearing tshirts, one saying "cheap" and one saying "ass".  In case you are wondering, my husband is cheap and Anne's is an ass!  Have a great weekend everyone!  We will be open next week,  October 2nd (Tuesday), the 4th, 5th, and 6th.

We are linking up at The Thrifty Decor Chick

Fall Welcome!

Fall is my favorite season of the year.  It is so beautiful, and the most pleasant I think.  Like always, I needed a little seasonal welcome at the front door.
Here's what I came up with this year.  I instantly loved the new look, as did my 9 year old daughter who said, "I like the mums, they give it a nice "pop" of color".
I used a wreath that we had at the shop that mom made.  I think it looks perfect.
I got my mums at Home Depot for about $11.  Not a bad price for the size.

I couldn't resist buying a couple of pumpkins.  I am like a kid when it comes to pumpkins.  I can never have too many!

Here is a closeup of the wreath mom made.  I love the way she can take a basic grapevine wreath and transform it.  She used some large burlap ribbon which is similar to the burlap ribbon we carry at the shop.  If you are in need of a wonderful wreath for your front door, we still have a couple at the shop.  Have a great week everyone! Happy Fall!

Ohio's Haul

On our latest trip, Anne and I finally had some luck.  Despite the pure exhaustion we felt from getting to bed at 2:00am after driving 6 hours, then getting up early to Flea, with cold damp weather that came half way through, we actually made quite the haul.  I have to say that this was our most tired and exhausting trip ever (Oronoco last year was brutal too).  It actually felt like work!  Here's some of what we brought back.

I think I'm in love!  How great are these vintage prescription boxes?  They are sooo fabulous, and very hard to find.
Ok, now I know I'm in love.  These things stopped my beating heart when we found them.  I only wish I had somewhere to put them.  I'd admire them every day.
As you can see they are perfect!  Some of them were filled with prescriptions as well.  Bonus!

There's only one thing to do with all those prescriptions.  Bundle them of course.

We have more vintage letter bundles this week as well.  Tied up with string and a fancy little vintage key.
Love this little cubby.  It is perfect for a counter or dresser top.
Mom put these together with hardware and antique trim pieces we brought back.  They are so cute.
Love these metal cubbies as well.  They even have a spot to slip a little description or note into each drawer front.

How cute are these puppies?  They are adorable.  Go ahead, show your age.  Did you wear these when you were little?  I sure did.  I know I didn't appreciate them as much then as I do now!  Same goes for the ugly, brown, orthopedic shoes from the "special" section of the store where my mom used shop for me.  Now, I would pay top dollar for a pair of cute, nerdy, brown loafers. In fact, I am in search of a pair of comfy penny loafers just like the ones I wore all throughout high school.

Do you think that's why I was voted "most likely to be a yuppie"? Because I dressed like a preppy nerd? Or do you think someone knew that one day I would own a wonderful, ever popular vintage shop in Barrington, IL.?  Nope, it's because I dressed like a nerd. How do you even do that when you wear a uniform? I'll tell you. On the days you don't have to wear a uniform, you don't dress down and wear jeans and hip, cute outfits. Instead, you wear "slacks", blouses and loafers and Benetton sweaters only.  Wow.  Just thinking of it makes me laugh.  I know Anne is laughing too.
We have customers ask frequently for baby shoes, so we thought we'd pick some up.
This little dressing table got a light tatter this week.  It's not new, but it sure looks different all lit up.

Another cubby, and a cool display rack. We're not sure what this displayed, but we thought it was perfect for something.  It would look cute with pictures or postcards and such hanging from it.
I've seen wooden shoe forms before, but none as big as these.

This shelf is filled with vintage treasures.

Some of us live in Lake County, so we thought this was kinda cute for the local girls.
This is a perfectly chippy old pillar.  It has a nice flat top. Something I sometimes wish I had!
Take a seat.  You won't believe how comfortable this old desk chair is. Mom scored this find.  I can't believe she's giving it up.
Doesn't anyone need a cute little desk?  We still have this one on the floor, as well as another.  At one time, everyone was asking for desks.  I guess they found them.  This one is painted in Old White Chalk Paint, and has crackled drawers.
We manage to keep mom busy with runners, wreaths, and other seasonal decorating items.  This wreath looks great on one of the adorable antique gates we brought back.
We are in love with this vintage chandelier.  It's so dainty and pretty.

Well, there ya have it.  Lots of vintage treasures to choose from.  Also, don't forget about the Chalk Paint.  We will open on Tuesdays from 9-12 for those who need paint and can't wait till the next opening.  Any day now we will be getting our Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint.  Yeah! Speaking of being open, and paint, we will be open this Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and SUNDAY Sept. 20, 21, 22, and 23rd - 10:00-3:00.  Come see what's new.

Beautiful Taste

I took my Lily to the Florist in town to pick up some flowers for her and Margaret's room (they share a room now so they can have 2 toy rooms, crazy I know!).  Before we left I was nervous, as she was excited, knowing  that "she" would be picking the flowers, not me.  I always have to put my two cents in, even when it's not my decision to make.  It would drive me nuts if she had picked an ugly combination, not that any flowers are ugly, but you know what I mean.
As you can see, she did a great job, all on her own!  I was so pleased.  So pleased in fact, that I took the vase of flowers and put them in my room.  I just thought they were so cute next to the vintage clock and books.  I'll have to get my own, because these are going back in the girl's room.
Lily is a Lily Rose, so it was fun to show her all the different Lilys and Roses in the shop.  I usually stop by Periwinkle Florist in Cary, when they are at the Farmer's Market on Sunday, but we couldn't wait till the weekend.  Remember to shop local.  You keep small family run shops like Tattered Tiques in business.  That's a good thing!

Btw- If you are in need of some paint, we will be open tomorrow morning(Tuesdsay) from 9-12pm.  We will also be open this weekend, Thursday, September 20th- Saturday, September 22nd.  Stop by and then head down the street to "Art in the Barn" at Good Shepherd Hospital in Lake Barrington.

Use What You Have

"Use what you have, buy what you need".  Good advice that I hear often from my 4 year old.  It kills me when she says it.   I probably only said it to her once in a store when she was trying to get me to buy unnecessary things.  So, of course for this little thank you note, I used what I had.
I literally went to the basement and gathered supplies from probably 5 different places, and then laid it out on the kitchen table.  I made a huge mess!  With the addition of Elmer's glue, a glue gun, and an old manila folder, I was ready to create.

The reason for this beautiful little creation was to say "Thank You" to my sister's friend Ann for something sweet she did for Tattered Tiques.  Speaking of "sweet"  we also sent along with the tag a box of our amazing sugar cookies.

As you can see, I had a little of everything in my craft room.  I'm sort of a hoarder that way!  I used vintage sheet music cards, vintage typewriter keys, and the flash card and #2 Finch card are vintage as well.  I also glittered a letter A, and added my muslin ribbon, as well as stamped burlap and the cutest Graphics Fairy image.    I think it turned out pretty cute, except that you can see the #2 card coming through the clock.  That bugs me a bit.

It's always nice to have things on hand when you need them.  A Hallmark card is great, but a handmade keepsake card is even more special!   If you need supplies to keep on hand at home, we have tons of this kind of stuff at the shop for you to start with.  What have you made lately?

Remember we will be open next week Sept. 20th, 21st, and 22nd.  In the mean time, Anne and I are headed to Ohio this Thursday for junking and mom is headed to A Pec Thing this weekend in Pectonica, IL.  Hopefully we will see you next week!

Nautical Nightstand

We recently painted a nightstand for a customer.  It was a small antique chest of drawers that was quite boring, until of course we added a little Chalk Paint.  Take a look.
I love the way it turned out.  It was painted in Pure White and Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint. It also received a slight tatter, and a layer of dark wax.
It's "dirtied" up enough I hope to conceal the wear and tear that a little boy can do.  With very nautical colors,  and dapper pulls that look like fancy buttons, on a blazer,  this little piece would look great in any nautical themed room.

The top is a beautiful sea of blue.  It reminds of ocean waves.
This little nightstand is going in a little boys room, but it would look just as great in a grownup or teens room.

Or in a family room.  Look at the stripes on the rug.  They remind me of the dresser stripes.

Here's another example of a nautical family room.  Notice the small table next to the couch.  Wouldn't our little dresser fit in perfectly in it's place?

Here is the before picture.  It's cute, but had a ton more potential.

One last look.  I hope the new little owner likes it!
